Defender 3.0 Ingenium Diesel Tuning – D200, D250, D300 & D350
The modern Defender L663 uses Jaguar Land Rover’s 3.0-litre Ingenium diesel engine across a number of different power outputs, including the D200, D250, D300 and D350.
Although they belong to the same 3.0-litre Ingenium diesel family, the different Defender versions are supplied with different factory power and torque outputs. Defender D200, D250, D300 and D350 – what is the difference?
The D200, D250, D300 and D350 are closely related versions of Jaguar Land Rover’s 3.0-litre six-cylinder Ingenium diesel engine, combined with mild-hybrid technology on the current Defender L663 range.
The model designation reflects the different factory performance levels offered by Land Rover. The exact engine specification and product availability can vary according to Defender model, year and application, so the individual DTUK vehicle page should always be used to confirm the correct product and performance figures for your vehicle.

How does a DTUK Defender tuning box work?
A DTUK tuning box is an external performance module developed specifically for the vehicle application. It connects to relevant engine sensors using vehicle-specific connectors and works in conjunction with the Defender’s original engine management system.
The important distinction is that the original ECU software is not replaced or rewritten.
This means the DTUK system can be removed and the vehicle returned to its original configuration without having to restore a modified ECU calibration.
For Defender owners who intend to keep their vehicle for only a few years, regularly change vehicles or simply prefer a removable performance solution, this can be an important advantage.
Defender tuning box, factory D350 upgrade or ECU remap?
There is understandably some confusion around the different ways the modern 3.0 Ingenium Defender can be tuned.
They are not all the same thing.
Factory or OEM-level power activation
Some Jaguar Land Rover specialists have access to factory-level diagnostic and configuration systems and offer upgrades between certain 3.0 Ingenium power variants.
For example, compatible lower-output vehicles may in some circumstances be configured to use a higher-output factory calibration such as the D350 specification.
This is different from a conventional aftermarket remap because the vehicle is being moved towards an existing Jaguar Land Rover calibration rather than having a completely new aftermarket engine map developed for it.
Availability depends on the exact vehicle, ECU, software version and specification.
Aftermarket ECU remapping
For a long time, conventional ECU tuning of many later Jaguar Land Rover 3.0 Ingenium vehicles was difficult because of the security used on the engine ECU.
Newer ECU unlocking methods and tuning tools have since made aftermarket remapping possible on some compatible 3.0 Ingenium ECUs.
Depending on the ECU and vehicle, this can involve removing the ECU and carrying out an unlocking or bench procedure before modified software can be written.
That is a genuine ECU remap and is different again from a factory-level D300-to-D350 style activation.
DTUK plug & play tuning box
DTUK takes a different approach.
The DTUK tuning system does not require the original Defender ECU software to be rewritten and does not require the ECU to be removed for a bench unlock.
The module is fitted externally, works alongside the original engine management system and can be removed again if required.

Why tune a Defender D200, D250, D300 or D350?
The 3.0 Ingenium diesel already suits the Defender extremely well because of its strong torque delivery, but additional usable torque can make a noticeable difference in a large and heavy vehicle.
This can be particularly useful for:
- Towing caravans, trailers or boats
- Driving with passengers and heavy loads
- Motorway overtaking
- Maintaining speed on gradients
- Off-road driving where controlled low and mid-range torque is useful
- Improving general everyday responsiveness

A well-developed calibration should make the Defender feel stronger and more responsive while retaining smooth and progressive power delivery.
Real DTUK Defender D350 dyno testing
DTUK has also carried out real-world dyno testing on the Defender D350.
Our tested vehicle produced the factory-rated 350 PS and 700 Nm in standard specification.
With the DTUK tuning system fitted, the same vehicle recorded 388 PS and 770 Nm.
This is a measured dyno result from an actual vehicle rather than simply a calculated performance claim.
The current DTUK application listing for compatible D350 models shows an expected tuned output of up to 390 PS and 790 Nm. As with any vehicle, measured results can vary between individual cars and testing conditions.

App control for compatible DTUK Defender tuning systems
Compatible DTUK systems are also available with smartphone app control.
Depending on the tuning system fitted, the DTUK app allows the driver to:
- Select different tuning programmes
- Adjust the available fine-tuning settings
- Control the engine warm-up timer
- View live readings from the engine sensors connected to the tuning module
- Receive compatible over-the-air module updates
This allows the tuning system to remain adjustable without suggesting that the driver is directly altering ECU parameters such as boost pressure, injection timing or engine rev limits.
What about PedalBox on a Defender?
PedalBox and a DTUK engine tuning box perform two different jobs.
A DTUK tuning box is designed to increase engine power and torque.
PedalBox changes the accelerator response, making the vehicle react more quickly to pedal movement without increasing engine power.
For compatible Defender applications the two systems can be used independently or together.

Defender D200 tuning
The D200 is the lower-output version of the 3.0 Ingenium diesel used in compatible Defender models.
Its strong underlying torque characteristics make it particularly suitable for drivers looking for additional usable performance without changing the original ECU software.
Current compatible DTUK applications list performance of up to 250 PS and 570 Nm. Check your exact Defender model for the correct application.
Defender D250 tuning
The Defender D250 combines the 3.0 Ingenium diesel with a factory output of approximately 249 PS and 570 Nm.
Current compatible DTUK applications list output of up to 299 PS and 640 Nm, providing a noticeable increase in both power and torque.
Defender D300 tuning
The D300 has become one of the most popular versions of the modern Defender 3.0 diesel.
With 300 PS and 650 Nm in standard form, it already provides strong performance, but current compatible DTUK applications list output of up to 355 PS and 720 Nm.
The additional torque is particularly relevant to Defender owners who tow or regularly use the vehicle fully loaded.
Defender D350 tuning
The D350 is the highest-output factory version of the 3.0 Ingenium diesel currently covered by these DTUK applications.
With 350 PS and 700 Nm as standard, current compatible DTUK applications list output of up to 390 PS and 790 Nm.
DTUK has also recorded a genuine dyno-tested result of 388 PS and 770 Nm from a D350, providing real-world evidence of the performance available from the system.
Defender 90, 110, 130 and Hard Top applications
The 3.0 Ingenium diesel has been used across several versions of the modern Defender, including:
