Defender D200, D250, D300 & D350 – Tuning Box, Factory Upgrade or Remap?

Owners of the 3.0-litre Ingenium diesel Defender may come across several different ways of increasing performance, and they are not all the same thing.

The Defender D200, D250, D300 and D350 belong to the same wider 3.0 Ingenium diesel family, but the exact specification, ECU software and available tuning options vary according to vehicle and production year.

There are currently three main approaches that an owner may encounter:

• Factory or OEM-level power activation – on certain compatible vehicles, Jaguar Land Rover specialists may be able to activate a higher-output factory calibration, such as moving an eligible lower-output vehicle towards D350 specification.
• ECU remapping – newer unlocking methods have made genuine aftermarket remapping possible on some compatible 3.0 Ingenium ECUs. Depending on the ECU, this can require removal, unlocking and bench programming before modified software can be written.
• DTUK plug & play tuning box – an external tuning system that works alongside the vehicle’s original engine management without rewriting the factory ECU software.

These are three different processes, so it is worth establishing exactly what is being offered before comparing performance upgrades.

Defender OCTA – Real Dyno-Tested Performance

The Defender OCTA is the halo model of the modern Defender range, and DTUK also has genuine dyno testing from a 4.4-litre V8 P635 OCTA fitted with the DTUK performance system.

On the dyno, the standard vehicle recorded:

• 629.5 PS corrected power
• 736.5 Nm corrected torque

With the DTUK system fitted, the same vehicle recorded:

• 689.6 PS corrected power
• 844.6 Nm corrected torque

The dyno comparison also recorded gains of up to +67 PS at 5,190 rpm and +113 Nm at 2,945 rpm.

This gives us genuine measured evidence from an actual Defender OCTA rather than relying solely on expected application figures.
