Audi TDI Tuning Boxes

Audi TDI engines have been an important part of the DTUK range for many years, covering everything from compact A3 models through to larger A6, A7, A8 and Q-series vehicles.

For compatible diesel engines, a DTUK tuning box works alongside the vehicle’s existing engine-management system rather than replacing the original ECU software.

Depending on the application, DTUK systems use signals from multiple engine sensors to alter the way the engine responds under load. The objective is not simply to chase a headline peak figure, but to provide stronger usable torque and power across the working rev range.

This can make an Audi feel more responsive when accelerating, overtaking or climbing gradients, with the greatest benefit often being the additional mid-range torque available during normal driving.

Audi A3, A4, A5 & A6 Tuning

The Audi A3, A4, A5 and A6 account for a large proportion of the Audi applications covered by DTUK.

Over the years these ranges have used numerous TDI, TFSI, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, so the vehicle badge alone is not enough to identify the correct tuning product.

An Audi A4 tuning box, for example, must be matched to the exact generation, engine and factory power output. The same applies to an Audi A5 tuning box or an Audi A3 or A6 performance application.

Audi TFSI Petrol Tuning Boxes

DTUK also supports a range of turbocharged Audi TFSI petrol engines.

As with diesel applications, compatibility depends on the exact engine-management and sensor configuration used by the vehicle. Where a compatible DTUK tuning system is listed, the product is configured specifically for that application.

The current Audi range includes everything from smaller turbocharged petrol engines through to considerably more powerful performance models, so there is no single generic “Audi petrol tuning box” suitable for every TFSI engine.

Always select the precise vehicle, generation and power output to see the products that DTUK currently supports.

Audi S & RS Performance Models

Audi’s S and RS ranges combine high-output turbocharged engines with sophisticated engine, drivetrain and transmission control systems.

DTUK offers products for selected compatible S and RS applications, but availability varies substantially between different engines and generations.

We therefore do not assume that a product available for one S or RS model is suitable for another. The individual application page is the authority for current DTUK compatibility and performance figures.

Where engine tuning is not available, an Audi may still have a compatible PedalBox or PedalBox Pro application for adjusting accelerator response.

Audi Q2, Q3, Q5, Q7 & Q8 Tuning

DTUK’s Audi coverage also extends across many of the Q-series SUV models.

Depending on the exact vehicle, available products can include engine tuning systems, PedalBox accelerator-response controllers or both.

Audi’s SUV range spans diesel, petrol, mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains, which makes checking the exact application particularly important.

Audi Hybrid Tuning

Hybrid Audis require the same application-specific approach.

The presence of an electric motor does not automatically mean that the combustion engine can or cannot use a DTUK tuning system. Compatibility depends on the particular engine and vehicle configuration.

Where DTUK lists a tuning product for a compatible Audi hybrid, use the figures and product information shown on that individual application page.

Other hybrid applications may be suitable for PedalBox or PedalBox Pro even where no engine tuning system is listed.

PedalBox & PedalBox Pro for Audi

Engine power is only one part of how a vehicle feels to drive.

Modern vehicles use an electronic accelerator pedal, and the relationship between pedal movement and the response requested from the engine is determined electronically.

PedalBox changes this accelerator-pedal characteristic, allowing the driver to choose a more responsive or more progressive feel without increasing the engine’s maximum power output.

Depending on the Audi application, DTUK may list PedalBox or PedalBox Pro.

PedalBox Pro adds features including wireless control and compatible app functionality, with additional functions available according to the product version.

PedalBox can also be used alongside a compatible DTUK engine tuning box because the two products perform different jobs: one changes engine performance, while the other changes accelerator response.

Audi e-tron & Electric Models – PedalBox EV

Audi now has a growing range of fully electric vehicles, including e-tron models across several parts of the Audi range.

A pure electric Audi does not use a conventional DTUK engine tuning box. There is no combustion engine, turbocharger or petrol or diesel fuel system for that type of tuning system to control.

Compatible electric Audis can instead use PedalBox EV, which has been developed specifically to alter accelerator response on electric vehicles.

PedalBox EV does not increase the electric motors’ maximum power or torque. It changes the relationship between accelerator-pedal movement and the response requested from the vehicle.

Because of the way the current DTUK website product system is structured, an electric Audi may display PedalBox Pro as the selectable product. For a compatible pure-electric application, the product supplied is PedalBox EV.

Audi Tuning Box vs Remap

One of the most common questions from Audi owners is whether to use a tuning box or have the ECU remapped.

The two approaches are different.

A conventional remap changes software within the vehicle’s ECU. A DTUK tuning box is an external system that works with signals between the engine sensors and ECU without rewriting the original ECU calibration.

Neither approach should be described as universally better for every Audi. The right choice depends on the vehicle, the ECU, the level of modification required and what the owner wants from the car.

This distinction has become increasingly relevant on newer vehicles as manufacturers have introduced additional ECU security and different methods of protecting engine-management software.

Does a DTUK Tuning Box Rewrite the Audi ECU?

No. A DTUK tuning box is an external tuning system and does not flash or rewrite the Audi’s original ECU software.

The box works with the relevant engine-sensor signals on the compatible application while the vehicle’s original ECU remains in control of the engine-management system.

The DTUK system can also be removed, allowing the vehicle to operate without the external tuning box fitted.

This is one of the fundamental differences between a plug & play tuning box and an ECU remap.

Can I Fit an Audi Tuning Box Myself?

Many DTUK systems are designed for plug & play installation using vehicle-specific connectors.

The exact installation process varies between Audi engines because sensor positions and engine layouts differ.

Rather than assuming every vehicle takes the same amount of time or uses the same connections, check the fitting information supplied for your particular application.
